Shelters are projects made during the first year of architecture studies in Estonian Academy of Arts – experiments with space, form and material on the scale of the human body. Each year one project out of 20 is chosen to be built. In my 1st year, my project was chosen and built in front of the university’s main building. With two weeks given for construction, the course must prepare the construction site, design, build, solve problems and contradictions.
My project experimented with the orientation and structural capacity of wood used “the wrong way,” inspired by the simple geometry of stacked firewood and the Estonian tradition of leaving openings within woodpiles.
