In central Estonia lies a small village called Koeru. One of the biggest nursing homes in Estonia is situated in Koeru, but it is in dire need of renovation. And renovation not only to improve energy efficiency, but also to enhance the living conditions for the residents. The building was constructed during the Soviet era and has changed very little since then. The living conditions are poor, the corridors are long and unlit, and the rooms are small and poorly planned. Our goal was to give the Koeru nursing home a completely new look and concept.
Right: Current situation in Koeru
This renovation project will not only change the building’s exterior and interior finishes but also reconfigure the entire internal movement logic with a focus on residents’ well-being. Various activities, spacious and bright rooms, and curved forms characterise our newly created public block. We also made significant changes to the wards/rooms blocks. We expanded or reduced the spaces as needed and replaced the long, straight corridors with comfortable S-shaped movement axes, which open into bright living rooms shared with neighbours.
